Hah, Oil and Water Do Mix!

As a boy, my Dad told me that Oil and Water don’t mix. I have spent my career trying to prove him wrong, and I finally have.

Dear Ole Dad was right about one thing, when mixed by themselves oil and water will not mix, at least not for very long. Shake a container of oil and water, and the oil will break up into smaller droplets and momentarily disperse in the water. Once the shaking stops, the oil droplets will rather quickly recombine and separate from the water. In the same situation, if you add an emulsifier or surfactant, recombination is delayed resulting in a more stable emulsion. For some fluids, this is all that you need. However, other fluids can’t keep it together unless you mix them with higher energy.

 

There are primarily three categories of metalworking fluids; Soluble Oils, Synthetics, and Semi-Synthetics. Although, when examined from the standpoint of mixability, you can re-categorize them as; 1.) Those that readily mix with water, 2.) Those that form a stable emulsion without high energy, like microemulsions, and, 3.) Those that won’t readily form a stable emulsion without some help. Although nearly all emulsions can benefit from mixing it is the last category that benefits the most from high-energy mixing.

 

Dosatrons Do More Than Suck…

We have all seen a venturi proportioning system, like a Dosatron™, where water flowing across an orifice creates suction drawing metalworking fluid out of a drum, sending it downstream. Although this metering may help to regulate a uniform concentration of water and metalworking fluid, it is a proportioning system and doesn’t do much in the way of mixing.

 

Even Vortex mixing, like a blender, doesn’t have enough energy to mix stable emulsions or create fine enough droplet sizes. For that, you’ll need some real mechanical power. Droplet size and stability depend, to a great extent, on the two fluids and the amount of mixing energy. If there is an insufficient amount of energy or the wrong type of energy, the emulsion may not combine properly, may not perform as intended, or may prematurely split or separate. Ultimately, a stable emulsion is obtained by reducing the oil phase to the finest possible droplet size. But don’t throw away your old Dosatron or proportional metering system just yet. The MISCO High Shear Mixer is meant to complement, not replace these devices.
