Bovine Blood Centrifuge

Blood plasma is the medium in which blood components are transported throughout the body. It is accounts for more than half of the blood fluid and is about 92% water. The other components of plasma consist mainly of proteins, the majority of these proteins are albumin, immunoglobulin, and fibrinogen (responsible for blood clotting).

 

In order to test blood using a refractometer you must separate and test only the plasma portion of the blood. To obtain the plasma, whole blood must be fractionated into its component parts. This is accomplished using a centrifuge. The centrifugal force caused by spinning blood causes the denser blood components (red and white blood cells, leukocytes and platelets) to the bottom of the sample tube, leaving the plasma and proteins on the surface.

How to prepare a plasma sample:

 

  1. 1. Place whole blood in suitable sample tube.
  2. 2. Place sample tube in centrifuge.
  3. 3. Separating the whole blood, based on the fixed speed of the centrifuge, should take 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature.
  4. 4. Once the blood has separated, draw off a small sample of the  plasma (clear liquid) with a disposable pipette and transfer the sample to the refractometer sample well.
  5. 5. Properly dispose of blood specimens after testing.
